In 2012, a young named Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman. During the trial, Zimmerman was found innocent even though Trayvon was unarmed. After the trial, Zimmerman taunted Trayvon’s parents by auctioning the gun he used to kill their son with. George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin because he was an African American and should have been sentenced to prison. This event also helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement.
No one can be completely sure what happened on the night Trayvon Martin lost his life, but evidence suggests that George Zimmerman acted inappropriately. To begin, Trayvon Martin was born on February 5, 1995 in Florida. He had 2 parents and 3 siblings. At the age of 17 he was fatally shot with a pistol near his apartment by George Zimmerman. According to ABC News, “George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch crime captain who shot dead 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.” Before Trayvon was killed he wanted to pursue his dream of being an electrician so he signed up for a college nearby. He was a good kid with no criminal record and only 1 suspension his whole school career. In addition, George Zimmerman was born on October 5, 1983 in Virginia. He also had 2 parents but no children. At the age of 30 he shot Trayvon Martin which costed him his life. According to Bio, “An athletically-inclined teen with an eye towards aviation, Martin had no criminal record when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012.” George Zimmerman was a volunteer patrol officer for the neighborhood both Trayvon and George lived in. Before that, George had other charges involving allegations of violence like Trayvon’s case. Finally, both Trayvon’s parents and Zimmerman’s parents were good people. However, some might have influenced their children a bit more. According to TheDailyBeast, “Zimmerman felt like killing their only son was not enough so he even taunted them during the trial.” During the trial, it felt like George Zimmerman had not felt any remorse for killing a young man and even taunting that young man’s parents after. As you can see, Trayvon Martin’s and George Zimmerman’s childhood’s/ early life had been similar. However, Trayvon was more of a high achiever than Zimmerman and wouldn’t do any bad.
During the trial, many people have stated that Trayvon had attacked first. That might be true, but he had good reason to do so in self defense because George Zimmerman was chasing him around the apartment complex. To begin, the law states that if you are getting injured or close to death, than you can legally defend yourself with any means necessary. According to Legal Dictionary, “ The force used in self-defense may be sufficient for protection from apparent harm (not just an empty verbal threat)…” The self defense law is a law that only can be used in dire situations like the Trayvon event. He attacked Zimmerman because Zimmerman was chasing him with a gun in his hand. To add on, from Trayvon’s parents’ point of view, Trayvon was coming home from 7-11 with a bag of candy for his brother, when Zimmerman started following him and attacked him. According to CNN, “Martin’s parents opted not to be in the courtroom when the verdict was read. They thought they would not be able to control their emotions — whichever way the jury decided… When they heard, they broke down.” When George was following/chasing Trayvon, Trayvon made a phone call to his mom saying that he was in trouble. The last thing he said to her was help. His parents have been very emotionally scared since. To end off, Zimmerman’s parents were at the trial but did not speak. However, his lawyer and he did speak. They both said Trayvon was walking on the sidewalk before spotting George and running towards him. Therefore beating him up afterwards. According to Sci Website, “On the plus side, from Zimmerman’s point of view, it could be a tool to help him raise the substantial amounts of cash he may need for his legal defense.” George Zimmerman created a website explaining the event in his perspective and to raise money and awareness for his legal bail or defense. To conclude, Trayvon Martin died for no other reason than self defense. Same goes both ways. Zimmerman was trying to defend himself against Trayvon as said in his story and Trayvon was trying to protect himself from George as said in Trayvon’s point of view.
To end, the event and the death of Trayvon helped spark the Black Lives Matter Movement as well as it made many protests and riots in Florida at that time. To begin, the Black Lives Matter Movement or the BLM is a movement focused on police brutality and unfairness, as wells as violence and hate crimes against African Americans. According to, #Black Lives, “BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was posthumously placed on trial for his own murder.” The most important factor that played a role in the making of the movement was the killing of Trayvon Martin and that George was released without a charge as well. Next, after word spread about Trayvon, 3 individuals created a hashtag which went viral in less than 3 days! According to Wikipedia, “In the summer of 2013, after George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the movement began with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.” Yet again Trayvon’s death has caused many more protests and riots as well as marches and public speeches. To end, on almost every social media there has been many conflict and controversy about the movement. According to Twitter, many people have commented on a post that Trayvon’s mother said. Comments such as “Say it loud.Say it proud.” and “We will keep fighting for liberty and justice for ALL.” Many people support the movement and what they have done to raise awareness for people like Trayvon.
So, as you can clearly see, many people were affected by the death of Trayvon Martin. Some might argue that that Trayvon was a thug and a bad kid. But that’s just the media portraying him like that. In reality, George Zimmerman was a bad person. Not only did he kill a young adult but he also had charges of battery assault before that. So, I believe that George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin because of his race and the way Trayvon was portrayed and he should have been locked away in jail for the crime that he DID commit. What do you think?
