How #BlackLivesMatter Affected the Society.

By: Leilani

The Black Lives Matter organization is incredibly important because they are demanding  an end to police brutality and discrimination. Many people were injured or killed by police officers and once  Alicia Garza saw these reports she and her friends Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors had created this organization to help prevent more deaths and severe injuries like the Trayvon Martin and Kelly Thomas cases.  Some people disagree with what Black Lives Matter is demanding however that is incorrect because they are standing up for the rights of innocent african-american lives.

To begin, Black Lives Matter is standing up against police brutality because of the constant killings and injuries of blacks and minorities. Most people don’t know what has been going on in the streets of many cities. It’s not only african-american men who are getting hurt or killed, it is also women who are being treated with disrespect.Black Lives Matter member, Alicia Garza explains, “We are committed to collectively, lovingly and courageously working vigorously for freedom and justice for Black people and, by extension all people. As we forge our path, we intentionally build and nurture a beloved community that is bonded together through a beautiful struggle that is restorative, not depleting.”This proves my topic sentence because it says in the text that they are working together to not only protect black families and people, but all people who are struggling with police discrimination and brutality.Next, Melissa notices six demands that society wants to help prevent brutality in America. One of the demands is to have communities hire and fire police because they want to choose people with the right qualities to protect them. “In one demand, the coalition calls for “community control,” in which they say residents in neighborhoods…should have the power to hire and fire police officers and dole out discipline in cases of misconduct related to excessive and deadly force.”This quote proves how important it is to agree as a community who will protect them and who they can trust for better or worse. If police are killing innocent men and women then how can that community trust the officers. Lastly,Kathleen Wong discovered that there are 385 kills in United States and blacks and other minorities are being killed three times more than the rate of whites.Kathleen Wong writes, “In May, the Washington Post analyzed the 385 fatal police shootings in the United States that had occurred so far in 2015… That same report found blacks to be killed at three times the rate of whites or other minorities.” Policemen are the ones who need to fix their actions and should be sorry for all the pain they caused.

Along with police brutality, police are also discriminating against people of color. Taking them as criminals or saying they look suspicious is one of the reasons why police attack.Kia Makarechi Understands that being and unarmed minority and being shot by a policeman is more than being an unarmed white person and being shot. The reason for this is because to policemen blacks look more suspicious than being a white armed person.Kia Makarechi notes, “The probability of being black, unarmed, and shot by police is about 3.49 times the probability of being white, unarmed, and shot by police on average.” My topic sentence is proved by this quote because policemen think that you have to up to something bad or mischievous because you have a colored skin tone.Minorities and blacks are always getting pulled over or having their vehicles searched by policemen because they are accused of having drugs or a weapon in their car. This is not fair for people are innocent and don’t understand why they are being stereotyped as a bad person.Ross D. Franklin states,“African Americans are more than twice as likely as white drivers to be searched during vehicle stops…but are found in possession of contraband 26% less often than white drivers.”This quote summarises how blacks and minorities are being discriminated by policemen because of their looks and what they have or don’t have.Policemen feel the need to put their hands on someone or point a gun at someone before getting the facts. Most blacks and minorities are automatically injured or killed even when the police don’t have the facts about what really happened.Ross D. Franklin explains, “police officers are more likely to use their hands, push a suspect into a wall, use handcuffs, draw weapons, push a suspect onto the ground, point their weapon, and use pepper spray or a baton when interacting with blacks. No one deserves to be treated with disrespect or be discriminated against because they are different skin tone. everyone needs to be treated equally because what has been happening to these innocent men and women.

To conclude, many innocent men and women of color are being treated with the  constant disrespect of legal authorities assuming African Americans are always in the wrong. We all need to be treated equally and without a doubt need to understand what it would be like to have to be pulled over or injured all the time because you are looked at suspiciously.
