Blacklivesmatter.com states, “#BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society.” #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murder. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes against unnecessary killings of Black people by police and vigilantes. The Black Lives Matter organization is one of the biggest if not the biggest anti-racist network in this day of age. The movement was inspired by the death of Trayvon Martin, but there is still controversy as to why the movement was created. Some people think it was due to white men taking advantage of black men in court. The Black Lives Matter movement is a call to action against racism and brutality against Black Americans. We need to know how, and why the movement started as well as who started it.
The Black Lives Matter movement was created #BlackLivesMatter on social media. After enough people used the hashtag it was time for action. Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors created the Black Lives Matter website and funded many peaceful protests. The co-founders of the organization are describing how the movement came to be. The Black Lives Matter website states, “In the summer of 2013, after George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the movement began with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. The movement was co-founded by three black community organizers: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi.” This proves that the movement was created by a hashtag after Trayvon Martin’s death because, his death sparked a lot of controversy and someone needed to step up. During an interview Barack Obama gives an inspiring speech about the Black Lives Matter movement. In an interview Barack Obama states, “There will always be people who say things to put you down. But I have the utmost respect for how the [Black Lives Matter] movement started with a hashtag and became such a big organization that still stands up against those people in their own peaceful manner.” This proves my claim due to the fact that Obama is praising the founders of the movement on how they were able to take off when starting with a hashtag. While in an interview multiple black live matter activists describe how the organization was started. Eliza Marie state’s, “Black Lives Matter is a national organization founded by three black women — Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors — in 2012 after the murder of 17-year old Trayvon Martin. He was shot by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida wherein afterwards, Zimmerman was acquitted for the crime. This led to the beginning of the simple yet powerful hashtag #BlackLivesMatter where people took to fighting for Martin’s death in social media.” The protesters explain how and why the organization was started and include the founders of the organization Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors. There is controversy on why the movement was started. But no controversy on who started it.

Garzas website states, “Garza is a co-founder of Black Lives Matter: once a hashtag, now a national organisation and a global rights movement. When your goal is to end violent policing, the oppression of black people and racism in the United States – and eventually everywhere else – you can’t hope to bring all parties to the table.” This proves my topic sentence seeing as this quote is from one of the creators of the movement so It is extremely reliable. This quote is also from an interview with Garza herself. On Opal Tometi’s website she explains the main reasons she organized the Black Lives Matter movement. “Ms. Tometi is a Co-founder of #BlackLivesMatter. The historic political project was launched in the wake of the murder of Trayvon Martin in order to explicitly combat implicit bias and anti-black racism and to protect and affirm the beauty and dignity of all Black lives.” This proves my topic sentence considering another one of the founders of this organization explains how the organization lifted off. Patrisse Cullors has an explanation on why she contributed to the organization. “In the summer of 2013 fueled by the acquittal granted to George Zimmerman after his murder of Trayvon Martin, Patrisse co-founded a global movement with a hashtag. Black Lives Matter has since grown to an international organization with dozens of chapters and thousands of determined activists fighting anti-Black racism worldwide.” This proves my topic sentence being that Cullors claims that she was one contributor to the organization. In conclusion Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors where the main contributors to the movement. Yet their followers were given huge contributes too.
The Black Lives Matter movement was created to spread the word of inequality in the united states. The founders wanted it to be a call to racial inequality. Many people think that the Black Lives matter movement “Reeks havoc” and “Involves no peace” A quote from news channel 4, “Speaking out against violence and asking for peace was something organizers preached to the crowd.” The Black Lives matter movement uses peaceful protests to bring awareness to the racism and violence towards blacks. The Black Lives Matter website describes who they are and what they stand for. “The Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks’ contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.” The Black Lives matter movement was created to stop oppression towards blacks. They also want to bring attention to the targeting of black people. A Black Lives Matter activist is standing up for her motives at a peaceful protest. “’We’re here tonight because several things have been transpiring in the news and a lot of times we just sit on social media and complain about it,” protester Angelo Valentin told CBS. “It’s time to step up and do some action’.” This protester is proving that the time for action is now and if we want change to happen we must step up. In conclusion the Black Lives matter movement was created to take a stand against racism.
